At Power Utilities Group, supporting the next generation of engineers is a key part of our commitment to the industry. This spring, we were delighted to welcome 18-year-old Cody, a T Level student from Walsall College, for a month-long work experience placement at our Aercon factory.

What Are T Levels?

T Levels are a relatively new qualification option for students aged 16 and over. Introduced to provide a high-quality technical alternative to A Levels, T Levels combine classroom learning with industry placements, giving learners the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real working environment.

Cody is currently studying a Maintenance, Installation and Repair T Level, which is part of the Engineering and Manufacturing pathway. Equivalent to three A Levels, the course is designed to prepare students for skilled roles in the engineering sector, as well as higher apprenticeships or further study at university. For Cody, who has his sights set on becoming a maintenance engineer, this placement was a chance to gain experience in a professional setting and strengthen his career prospects.

Hands-On Learning at Aercon

During his time at Aercon, Cody worked closely with the manufacturing team, getting involved in a wide range of technical and mechanical tasks. His placement was carefully planned to expose him to multiple aspects of the factory’s operations, allowing him to develop practical skills that aligned with his studies.

Cody’s responsibilities covered a variety of hands-on tasks across the workshop, where he gained experience working with machinery and tools. He contributed to the assembly of components, supported testing processes, and helped prepare materials for production. Throughout his time, Cody developed practical skills and even had the opportunity to create parts used in final products. Each task gave him new insight into the processes that go into manufacturing Aercon’s specialist air pressure stabilisation products.

From the beginning, Cody showed a strong willingness to learn. He quickly got to grips with the tools and techniques involved and wasn’t afraid to take on new challenges. His practical attitude and attention to detail made him a valuable addition to the team throughout his time with us.

Staff Reflections

Several members of the Aercon team were impressed by Cody’s performance and dedication. Mike, one of our experienced fabricator welders, praised Cody’s positive attitude and his ability to adapt to hands-on tasks. He commented on how Cody consistently showed a healthy work ethic and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in, no matter the job.

Tony, an assembler who worked alongside Cody more closely, was also full of praise. He said that working with Cody had been a pleasure and noted his ambition, attentiveness and eagerness to improve. Having trained many new recruits and learners over the years, Tony shared that Cody stood out as one of the most driven individuals he has encountered. He added that whoever works with Cody next is extremely lucky, and that Cody will be missed.

A Wider Perspective on Industry Placements

Cody’s placement also provided an opportunity for us to reflect on the value of industry placements for both learners and employers. As the first T Level student to join Power Utilities Group, his time with us offered a glimpse into the mutual benefits these programmes can deliver.

For Cody, the placement has been a chance to complete a crucial part of his course and gain deeper insight into the engineering industry. For our team, it has been an opportunity to share knowledge, mentor a future professional and build stronger links with local education providers.

Anita Wright, our Business Development Director, has been following Cody’s progress and sees industry placements as a vital bridge between education and employment. Cody’s time with us has demonstrated just how effective these programmes can be in helping young people understand the range of roles available in niche, specialist sectors like ours – while giving employers the chance to support future talent.

A Fond Farewell

As Cody’s placement came to an end, the Power Utilities Group team came together to wish him well. To mark the occasion, we presented him with a gift card and a card signed by many of the colleagues he had worked alongside. It was a small gesture of thanks for the effort and energy he brought to the factory over the past few weeks.

Reflecting on his time with us, Cody expressed gratitude for the support he received and the opportunity to experience a professional environment. With just a few months left before completing his T Level, his placement has helped him finish his course with confidence and clarity about his future career.

Looking Ahead

It’s been a pleasure to have Cody as part of the Power Utilities Group family, even if only for a short time. We’re confident that the skills, experience and attitude he has shown will take him far in his chosen career. We look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next and we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.

We also want to extend our thanks to Walsall College for their ongoing support of learners like Cody. Their commitment to employer engagement plays a crucial role in preparing students for successful futures.

From all of us at Power Utilities Group – best of luck, Cody. You’ve got a bright future ahead.
